Severe Weather Warning Bulletin for Central and Southern Vanuatu issued by the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department, Port Vila at 11:00 am Friday, January 08, 2016

Synoptic Summary
Tropical cyclone ULA 998 hPa located east of Tafea province, slow moving in the west southwesterly direction.

Forecast
Showers and isolated heavy rainfalls are expected to affect the Central and Southern Vanuatu. People in these areas are advised to take extra precautions.

The next routine bulletin will be issued at 5pm today.

Information Number 1 on a Tropical Cyclone ULA issued by the Vanuatu Meteorology
and Geo-Hazards Department, Port Vila at 11:41am VUT Friday 8 January 2016.

At 11:00am local time today, Tropical Cyclone Ula (984hPa) was located at
18.4S 174.7E. The Tropical Cyclone is positioned at the bottom right corner of
the square letter N, number 8 (N,8) of the Vanuatu tropical cyclone tracking map.
This is about 590 KM east northeast of Tanna. The system is moving north at 6 KM/HR.

Winds close to the centre are estimated at 90 KM/HR and expected to intensify
further. The system is expected to be at 18.4S, 174.2E within the next 6 to
12 hours.

At this stage, Tropical Cyclone Ula does not pose any threat yet to any island
of Vanuatu. However, seas will become rough over the central and southern waters
of Vanuatu as the system continues to move westward towards Vanuatu. Isolated
heavy rainfalls are expected over the central and southern islands in the next
48 hours.

Marine strong wind warning for Central, Channel and Southern waters is current.
Severe weather bulletin for heavy rainfalls and possible flooding over low lying
areas and areas close to the river banks is current for the central and southern
islands. High seas warning for open waters for Vanuatu area has been issued.

The next information on the system will be issued at 6:00pm or earlier if the
situation changes.
