Police warned voters not to give their electoral cards to candidates and their supporters. The warning came after police received allegations that a former french national that has been lately granted Vanuatu citizenship and owns businesses in Port Vila is collecting the electoral cards for his employees.
There are three naturalized citizens who are contesting in Port Vila constituency. Among them, there are two former french nationals and a Chinese national. They have been granted Vanuatu citizenship and they have constitutional right to vote and to stand in a election as candidates. Under the law of election in Vanuatu, it is illegal to collect electoral cards for voters and demand them to vote for a candidate.
There have been cases in the past that big companies in Vanuatu have collected electoral cards for their employees and demanded them to vote for a candidate.
