Electoral Office has sent over 20 000 new electoral cards to the island of Tanna in Southern part of Vanuatu. The sending of the new cards follow the reports that voters lost their cards during cyclone Pam. The Acting Principal Officer, Joe Johnson Iati said the decison to sent new cards on Tanna follow concerns that many voters will not go to the poll during election day on 22nd January because their cards were destroyed during cyclone Pam. Tanna is one of the biggest constituency in Vanuatu with 7 seats and was severely damaged during cyclone last year. Mr Iati said that in the constituencies that were severely damaged by Pam, the electoral office is doing its best to provide duplicate cards to the eligible voters . The date line to make the copy of the electoral card is on 16th of January. Mr Iati said that it is important for the voters who have lost their cards to go the appropriate centers to get new cards. He said that there are over 200 candidates and over 200 000 registered voters throughout the country. He said the names of the candidates should be made public this week. Yesterday it was the last day for the candidates who have debts to government to fix it.Mr Iati said that a candidate still own money to the government and government statutory bodis, his name name will be removed from the list and will not contest snap election on 22nd of this month. After the official publication of the name of the candidates, the electoral campaign will start. Mr Iati said that the campaign will end at 12h00 mid-night on the 19th of January.
